Rap Music Is “Therapeutic” for Eminem: ‘That’s always been the way for me’

Eminem is speaking out on the therapeutic benefits of art.

The 49-year-old winner of 15 Grammy Awards was recently on Sirius XM Radio channel 45’s Sway in the Morning Show, where he talked about how rapping about mental health and addiction changed his life.”I believe one of the beautiful things about rap music… is that you can put so much of your life into it,” Eminem said over the phone. “It’s therapeutic, and I’ve always been that way.”

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, has used his music to let his fans in on some of the more personal parts of his life. On his 2010 album, Recovery, he also wrote a few verses about his addiction to prescription pills.

In an interview with Men’s Journal in 2015, Eminem talked about his drug overdose in 2007 and how he beat his drug addiction by working out a lot.” I went to the hospital in 2007 because I took too many pills. I almost weighed 230 pounds. I don’t know exactly how I got so big. Still, I have some ideas “he told the newspaper. “The coating on the Vicodin and Valium I’d been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach. To keep from getting stomach pain, I was always eating and not very well.

The rapper performed at the 2022 Super Bowl with Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent as a surprise guest earlier this year. After performing “Lose Yourself,” which won him an Oscar and a Grammy, at SoFi Stadium, Eminem got down on one knee and held his head in his hand while Dr. Dre paid tribute to Tupac. By playing some of “I Ain’t Mad at Cha.”

In May, it was announced that the rapper would join Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics, Carly Simon, and Dolly Parton in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this fall.
