If such petty things become huge issues in your mind and bother you for days and weeks, you are having negative thoughts.

While you are sad, practice engaging with your senses at the moment. Focus on taste and sound, and ignore them more often than not. Our brains are full of thought, and focusing on our present actions seems to be unnatural to our brains. Smell and touch. This leaves you with less time to worry and places you in the moment, where you have the space to challenge the negative thoughts that play around.
