What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries or the related areas of the fallopian tubes and the peritoneum. Women have two ovaries that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus. And, these ovaries make female hormones and produce eggs.

What are the different types of ovarian cancer?

  • Epithelial ovarian cancer: Firstly, this cancer may arise from the surface of the ovary (the epithelium), which is the most common ovarian cancer. But, fallopian tube cancer and primary peritoneal cancer also include within this designation.
  • Germ cell ovarian cancer: However, this cancer may arise from the reproductive cells of the ovaries and is rare.
  • Stromal cell ovarian cancer: This cancer may arise from connective tissue cells, which is very rare.

Factually, not all tumors are cancer. At this point, few ovarian tumors may be abnormal but not necessarily cancerous.

Major risk factors for ovarian cancer

Exactly, the possible causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, these factors can increase your risk:-

  • A family history of ovarian cancer
  • Genetics mutations of the gene that may be associated with ovarian cancer, like BRCA 1 and BRCA 2
  • An individual history of breast, uterine, or colon cancer
  • Obesity
  • Mostly use of fertility drugs or hormone therapies
  • No history of pregnancy
  • Endometriosis etc.

What are the major signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer?

It’s easy to know the major signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Because these signs and symptoms are similar to other common problems or they tend to come and go. However, the major early signs and symptoms may include:-

  • Abdominal bloating, pressure, and pain
  • Abnormal fullness after eating
  • Eating disorders
  • An increase in urination
  • An increased urge to urinate

However, ovarian cancer may also cause other symptoms, such as:-

  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Back pain
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Painful intercourse etc.

However, these symptoms may occur for any number of reasons. Therefore, they aren’t necessarily due to ovarian cancer. Moreover, many women have some of these issues at one time or another. However, these kinds of signs and symptoms are often temporary and respond to simple treatments in most cases.

Although, the signs and symptoms will persist if they’re due to ovarian cancer. These signs and symptoms usually become more severe as the tumor grows. By this time, ovarian cancer has usually spread outside of the ovaries, making it much harder to treat effectively.

However, few signs of the later stages of ovarian cancer are irregular menstruation, difficulty eating, and urinary issues, when cancer has spread to the pelvis and the abdomen. Unfortunately, in the earliest stage of ovarian cancer, there are no symptoms, when the cancer is contained to the ovaries and easiest to treat. However, there are some possible factors you can control to reduce your risk of ovarian cancer.

1. Exercise and Diet

Healthy exercise and a healthy able to decrease the risk of ovarian cancer. Along with an active lifestyle, incorporating certain foods into your diet can also decrease your risk. Certain foods like beans, eggs, nuts, and other foods that provide Vitamin D are recommended as well as foods high in Vitamin A like carrots, leafy greens, and sweet potatoes.

2. Avoiding Carcinogens

Carcinogens are hazardous substances that are capable of causing cancer. Carcinogens can cause ovarian cancer only if you are already at risk of developing cancer, such as a family history or a genetic mutation. Avoiding carcinogenic substances such as talcum powder, which has been found in everyday products such as baby powder, vaginal deodorants, and makeup could decrease your risk of ovarian cancer.

3. Healthy Lifestyle

Avoiding the high use of tobacco products can not only lower your risk for ovarian cancer but many other types of cancer as well. It’s also recommended to limit your alcohol consumption to three drinks per week.
